The Pindo Palm Tree; also called the Jelly Palm and South American Jelly Palm - is native to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. It is a slow-growing palm tree reaching heights of 18-25 feet. It belongs to the 'Feather Palm' family of palm species. The feather-like leaves of the Pindo Palm grow 5 to 10 feet long. The leaves grow in the form of an arch and then curve back towards the trunk. The Pindo Palm is the cold hardiest of the feather palms and tolerates temperatures to minus 10 degrees. It is grown from Virginia to Florida. The cherry-size fruit is edible and has a flavor of pineapple mixed with apricot and vanilla. The fruit is used to make jelly and jams. Used as an ornamental tree for streets, decks, patios and parking lot islands.
